This is nothing new for Gransolar Group, as it has been working for years on the E for environment, the S for social and the G for governance, an area we wanted to explore in greater depth with its head, Natalia Bustamante.

How can we explain the relevance of governance and the documents that emanate from it in a company such as this?

At Grupo Gransolar, people from many different countries, cultures, and roles work together, and our work is carried out in a wide variety of regulatory contexts. That is precisely why we have common policies, procedures, protocols, and other internal rules, which help us to work consistently and responsibly, in line with our values, the law, and best practices.

These rules are not intended to complicate our work or add unnecessary bureaucracy. Their main purpose is to guide us, help us make the right decisions on a daily basis, and protect both the people and the companies within the Group. They serve as a guide to what is expected of us and how to act in common or sensitive situations.

Why is compliance essential?

It is important to emphasise that knowledge and compliance with these rules is a responsibility of everyone who forms part of the Group, regardless of country, position, or seniority. This is not just a matter of good practice: in some cases, non-compliance can have serious legal consequences.

In this regard, it should be remembered that the Spanish Criminal Code allows legal entities to be held criminally liable for certain offenses committed within the organization. In the worst case scenario, a breach of our policies or procedures could lead to charges and even convictions for Group companies, as well as a significant reputational impact and individual disciplinary consequences.

How are employees made aware of the need to comply with these rules?

We explain the need to be familiar with the policies and regulations that apply to each of our areas of work, which are accessible through internal communication channels and also on our website.

In addition, we urge you to actively and consciously comply with the rules referenced in these ‘living’ documents on a daily basis, which evolve with the business, regulatory changes and practical experience.

Ultimately, the key is to understand that governance and compliance are not the responsibility of a single area, but a collective effort that enables us to continue growing in an ethical, safe and sustainable way.

To get it, it’s necessary to score a positive rating of 80 points or more in the areas assessed, which include water and energy efficiency, materials and resources used, location and transport, and design innovation.

GGC has signed strategic agreements to develop its activity for relevant companies in projects such as Limestone Coast North Energy Park, a 250 MW / 500 MWh battery storage system for Pacific Green, and is in the process of closing deals with major industry players, to be announced in the near future. In line with its commitment to sustainability, the building has been designed with cutting-edge technology, incorporating everything from intelligent energy management systems to sensors and IoT devices to maximize energy efficiency. Furthermore, aligned with a forward-looking perspective and a commitment to electric mobility, electric vehicle charging points have been installed within the building itself

Also, renewable resources have been utilized through the installation of photovoltaic canopies in the parking area, and a photovoltaic self-consumption system on the rooftop. These measures significantly reduce their environmental footprint and reduce dependence on the traditional electricity grid.

In this context, and coinciding with the World Day for Safety and Health at Work, celebrated on 28 April, Gransolar celebrated the 1st Safety, Health and Environment Week,in which all the company’s employees were involved. Throughout the week, talks, workshops, contests and other participatory activities were held at all the headquarters and for everyone in the Group’s different business lines (PV Hardware / PVH, GRS, ISE Energía and PVHome).

PVH, for example, has recently implemented a new pre-assembly line at its factories in Spain, Saudi Arabia and the United States. This pre-assembly service for its tracker components, which considerably reduces the completion time of its projects and shortens on-site installation time by more than 40 percent, has required adapting the workstations of the factory operators, who now have to handle heavy parts with their bare hands. To this end, ‘ergonomic tools and workbenches have been acquired, the operators themselves have been trained with physical activity techniques designed and taught by a physiotherapist and active breaks have been implemented through video tutorials dedicated to improving working posture and strengthening the muscles,’ as Cristina Capellán, HSE Global Manager of PVH, explains..

Workshops and activities

Ergonomics played a prominent role in the activities of Gransolar’s 1st Safety, Health and Environment Week, with on-site workshops given by specialists at the Almeria, Madrid and Valencia sites. In these workshops, practical knowledge was passed on to both office staff and employees at the manufacturing sites.

Mental health was another of the key points of Gransolar’s 1st HSE Week, where the need to take care of oneself, of others and of the world around us was highlighted as fundamental to the three aspects embraced by the HSE Hub department.

‘In a company that has experienced great growth in a short period of time, we must be especially vigilant of the pressure to which our teams are subjected and take care of individual well-being, also on a mental level,’ says Gonzalo de Cea-Naharro, HSE Global Manager of the Gransolar Group. ‘It is very important that people feel supported in their jobs, that they feel appreciated, valued and supported at all times, which contributes to the good working environment that exists at Gransolar today.

“Without a higher growth in electricity demand, much of the planned renewable energy will not be installed, it’s as simple as that,” says Vegas, who warns that this factor is critical to avoid curtailment and maintain “reasonable pricing.”

The Gransolar Group co-founder suggests that there should be greater incentives to grow the electric car fleet, and points to the “questions” raised by the ambitious renewables targets set out in the PNIEC.

In this context, Domingo Vegas insists on the importance of storage supported by this National Plan. “This commitment to batteries would be a major step forward at all levels: it would make it possible to correct the deviations generated by a massive influx of renewable energy, and it would make it possible for renewable energy to develop at the expected pace.”

In one year, Gransolar doubled its income and revenues

The company doubled all figures in 2022, a year in which it has maintained its international expansion strategy. At the end of 2022, Gransolar Group had a portfolio of almost 300 projects developed around the world. Of particular relevance is the Group’s presence in Europe, the Middle East and Australia.

By business units, the highest growth was achieved by PV Hardware (PVH), a world leader in the manufacture and supply of solar trackers and their components, with an 89% increase in turnover. PVH leads the sector globally through innovation and in-house manufacturing of all its products at its factories in Valencia (Spain) and Jeddah (Saudi Arabia), and at the production center it is about to inaugurate in Houston (USA).

Control over the whole value chain in photovoltaic energy

The company’s capacity to offer solutions throughout the entire value chain of a PV plant, collecting the interactions, knowledge and synergies between the different areas, has made Gransolar Group a world leader in its sector, with presence in 28 countries and almost 300 projects supplied worldwide, totaling 25 GW.

Domingo Vegas, President of the company, emphasized: “we are really satisfied with the results obtained in 2022, which are due to the work and talent of our more than 1,500 employees around the world. On the other hand, our strategy is to continue growing, for which we already have a portfolio of around 2,200 million euros in 2023 and 2024”.

The three plants included in the operation have a total installed capacity of 14.7 MWp and are expected to be operational in 2025. Combined, the plants will enable an annual production of 30 GWh, which will avoid the emission of around 6,000 tons of CO2 per year and provide enough energy to supply around 10,000 homes per year, or the equivalent of around 7,500 electric vehicles. The development of the plants will create around 120 direct jobs.

100% clean vehicle recharging

Eranovum plans to extend through these plants the innovative concept of the photovoltaic station, which allows the charging of electric vehicles with 100% renewable energy supplied directly and under self-consumption regime by the solar plants, without tolls or additional costs. This is a pioneering concept, since, unlike the electric charging stations, the electric vehicle charging station is connected to the solar photovoltaic plant and has enough power to provide ultra-fast recharging to users who need it.

“Contributing to an initiative like this one to promote sustainable mobility encourages us to continue advancing in the development of photovoltaic projects. One of our principles is to establish alliances with companies aligned with our idea that there is another way of producing energy that is much more efficient and sustainable and, in this sense, we are fully satisfied with this agreement,” explained Alberto Macía, Gransolar’s Project Development Director.

José Luis Aguirre, co-founder and partner of Eranovum, said: “Eranovum’s aim is to accelerate the transition to a new energy era, and solar energy production, which has always been in our DNA, is a key part of this. These new plants will undoubtedly contribute to our goal of building a diversified portfolio to produce clean and competitive energy to meet the energy needs of our electric vehicle charging point grid”.
